These are built around the approach in our picky eater guide: serve the parts separately rather than assembled, always include one thing they reliably eat, and let them choose from what’s there.

Every one of these goes on the table in about twenty minutes, and each is written as components. The adult version is usually the same food with more of it, plus whatever seasoning you’d normally add.

Pasta and grains

  1. Pasta, butter, grated cheese, peas, cherry tomatoes. The plainest thing here and often the most eaten.
  2. Pasta, tomato sauce served on the side, sweetcorn, cucumber. Sauce on the side is the whole point.
  3. Couscous, roasted pepper strips, feta, cucumber. Couscous takes five minutes off the heat.
  4. Rice, black beans, sweetcorn, grated cheese, avocado. A build-your-own bowl.
  5. Noodles, shredded chicken, cucumber batons, a little sesame oil.
  6. Pasta, pesto on the side, peas, cold ham.

Eggs

  1. Scrambled eggs, toast fingers, cherry tomatoes, cucumber. Dinner is allowed to be breakfast.
  2. Omelette strips, new potatoes, peas. Cutting it into strips makes it finger food.
  3. Boiled eggs, buttered toast, carrot sticks, apple slices.
  4. Frittata squares with potato and cheese, cucumber, sweetcorn. Good cold the next day.

Protein and veg

  1. Fish fingers, mashed potato, peas, ketchup in a pot.
  2. Roast chicken from yesterday, couscous, cucumber, satsuma.
  3. Sausages cut into coins, mash, sweetcorn, apple. Cut lengthways first — round coins are a choking risk for young children.
  4. Salmon flaked off the skin, rice, peas, cucumber.
  5. Meatballs, pasta, sauce on the side, grated cheese.
  6. Chicken strips, potato wedges, carrot sticks, dip in a pot.

Bread-based

  1. Cheese on toast cut into fingers, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, grapes.
  2. Pitta fingers, hummus, cucumber, pepper strips, olives. A mezze plate is component serving by design.
  3. Bean and cheese quesadilla in wedges, sweetcorn, avocado.
  4. Baked potato, butter, cheese, beans served alongside rather than on top.

Two notes worth reading

Choking hazards. For children under about four, quarter grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthways, cut sausages into strips rather than coins, and avoid whole nuts and popcorn. The NHS and the American Academy of Pediatrics both publish guidance on this; follow it rather than our list. Stay with your child while they eat.

Portions. Serve less than you think. A small portion that gets finished is a better result than a full plate that gets pushed away, and seconds are always available.

Making these work through the week

Most of these share components — cooked pasta, rice, roast chicken, washed and cut vegetables. Cooking those once and using them across three dinners is what turns twenty minutes into ten. Our weekly meal prep system is built around exactly that.
